"Current (for the moment) Toronto Mayor Rob Ford caused quite a stir when he ducked out of a council meeting in order to coach the Don Bosco High School football team. Ford’s strategy seemed to rely on an interesting assertion in terms of civic engagement and public service: social considerations and the community commitments that attend the social realm are more important than those commitments that have been made for economic gain - that is to say: one’s job. Ford had made a commitment to these less privileged boys and nothing - and he meant nothing - was going to stand in his way. His gambit was based on his belief that Ford Nation - his ardent fan base - would agree that this was the way the Mayor of one of the world’s Global cities should behave, it’s the way everyone should behave - it is the epitome of an engaged and generous citizen."
